Transfer Credit

To transfer credit earned at another school or through an exam, you'll need to submit official transcripts and/or score reports to NIU for evaluation. Once we receive your documentation, we'll evaluate eligible transfer credit and post it to your Transfer Credit Report in MyNIU.

Submitting Documentation

Transcripts from Other Schools

After you're admitted to NIU, you must provide official transcripts from schools you've attended to NIU's Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

Electronic transcripts: Use your school's transcript service (Parchment, National Student Clearinghouse, etc.).

Paper transcripts: Have your transcripts sent directly from your school to:

Office of Undergraduate Admissions
Northern Illinois University
1425 West Lincoln Hwy.
DeKalb, IL 60115

Military Transcripts

If you have a Joint Services Transcript from the military, you can have it sent to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions for evaluation of possible college credit.

Exam Score Reports

If you've taken AP, IB, CLEP, DSST or other exams that may be eligible for college credit, you must provide the official score report. Official score reports must be sent directly from the testing agency to NIU Testing Services. NIU cannot award exam credit based solely on another college's transcript.

Transfer Credit Evaluation

The Office of Registration and Records determines which of your courses are eligible to transfer and applies academic credit to your record based on NIU's transfer credit equivalencies.

Decisions about transfer credit eligibility are based on the transfer credit regulations in NIU's undergraduate catalog.

If a transfer course does not already have an established equivalency, the appropriate NIU academic department may review it before credit is awarded.

Evaluation times vary depending on the time of year and the number of transcripts received. In most cases, transfer credit is evaluated and posted within 10 business days of NIU receiving your official transcript.

Viewing Your Transfer Credit Report

After your transfer credit is posted, follow these steps to view your Transfer Credit Report in MyNIU:

  1. Select MyNIU Student System and log in.
  2. From the Student Homepage, select Advisor & Academic Progress.
  3. Select Transfer Credit Report.

If you have questions or concerns about how transfer credit was applied to your NIU degree program, contact your academic advisor for further explanation and support.

If a course transferred as an elective and you believe it should fulfill a specific NIU degree requirement, ask your advisor for help. They may request additional materials like a course syllabus, copies of assignments or other information to help determine if the course should fulfill a requirement.
