Holds on Student Accounts

As you prepare to register for classes, it’s important to know if one or more holds have been placed on your account. You won’t be able to register until all holds are removed.

To see if there are any holds on your account, log in to MyNIU and select MyNIU Student Center. Any holds will be located on the right side of the screen, next to your schedule. To view information on a hold, click the Details button next to or below the hold.

There are several reasons why one or more holds may be placed on your account. The most common holds are listed below, along with information about how to get them removed.

If there is a Student Financial Responsibility Agreement hold on your account, you need to complete the agreement before you can register.

To have the hold removed, please visit your MyNIU account to complete the Student Financial Responsibility Agreement. Instructions on how to complete the agreement are available online as well.

The hold will be removed immediately after the agreement has been completed.

For more information, contact the Office of the Bursar at bursar@niu.edu.

If the balance due on your account is more than $1500, a financial hold will be placed on your account.

To get the hold removed, make the payment due on your account. For information on making payments, visit the Office of the Bursar.

The hold will be removed automatically when you make your payment. In some cases, the hold will need to be removed manually. If the hold does not come off your account after you make your payment, contact the Office of the Bursar for assistance.

You may also contact the Financial Aid and Scholarship Office or meet with a tuition counselor in the Office of the Bursar to review your financial options.

A student conduct hold will be placed on your account for the following reasons:

  • You’ve refused to participate in an ongoing Title IX investigation.
  • You haven’t completed sanctions related to a finding of responsibility for a Title IX incident.
  • You’ve been banned from campus, and the hold is in place to prevent registration during the period of banishment.
  • You owe the Student Conduct office sanctions that must be completed from an off-campus entity before you return to campus.

The process for getting the hold removed depends on the reason for the hold. To determine this, refer to the paperwork you received from the Student Conduct office related to your conduct case.

If nothing is due to the Student Conduct office, the hold will be removed automatically on the expiration date. If something is due to the Student Conduct office, the hold will be removed when the office receives the appropriate documentation. Holds will be removed within one business day.

For more information, contact the Student Conduct office at 815-753-1571 or judicial@niu.edu.

If you haven’t provided Health Services with a copy of your immunization record, an immunization compliance hold will be placed on your account. Learn more about NIU’s immunization requirements.

To get the hold removed, give Health Services a copy of your immunization record. Their fax number is 815-753-9599.

For more information, contact Health Services at 815-753-9585.

If you have an advising hold on your account, it is because you are required to meet with your academic advisor prior to registering. You will find your primary academic advisor listed in Navigate and you may schedule an appointment with them from Navigate. You may also log in to MyNIU and select “Advisor & Academic Progress” from the home screen.

If you haven’t provided final official high school and/or college transcripts to the Office of Admissions, an admissions hold will be placed on your account.

To get the hold removed, have your transcripts sent to the Office of Admissions. They may be sent electronically, if this service is offered by the sending institution. You can bring them to the Office of Admissions, if they are in a sealed envelope from the sending institution. Transcripts may also be mailed to:

Office of Admissions
Northern Illinois University
1425 W Lincoln Hwy
DeKalb, IL 60115

Admissions holds will be removed manually and processed by submission date. This can take up to one business week after transcripts are received.

For more information, contact the Office of Admissions at admissions@niu.edu.

If there's a Student-Athlete Academic Support Services (SAASS) hold on your account, you need to meet with your academic counselor before you can register.

To meet with your counselor and get the hold removed, contact Student-Athlete Academic Support Services at 815-753-1342.
