As a parent, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) protects the privacy of your child’s educational records from early childhood through college. However, once your child turns 18 or enters college, the rights previously held by you transfer exclusively to your student.

Ordinarily, parents of Northern Illinois University students obtain information about their children's records directly from their children. FERPA does state that the university may release information to the parents of a student but is not required to do so.
